Fiji is well known for being an ocean paradise with stunning turquoise waters and white sands.
It is also a mecca for surfing and lovers of water sports, with the World Surf League recently making its return to the islands.
Aussie surfer Felicity Palmateer was on hand for the event, and has shared some of her top Fiji tips with 9Travel after returning from the competition.

Fresh from the World Surf League’s return to Fiji, I’ve got to say the islands are just incredible. My top three must-dos?
First, you’ve got to get in the water. The crystal-clear lagoons and fringing reefs are perfect for snorkelling and diving. Second, embrace the island life and slow down. The pace of living in Fiji is something special – you feel relaxed the moment you step off the plane.
And third, definitely try some local seafood. The fish is as fresh as it gets – you can catch it in the morning and have sashimi that afternoon. It’s amazing!

The key when looking for a resort in Fiji is to find the perfect blend of luxury and adventure, so somewhere like Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is ideal.
You want a place where you have access to world-class surf breaks like Cloudbreak or Frigates, but where you can chill by the pool with a cocktail if that’s what you’re feeling by the afternoon.
The key is finding a spot that lets you experience that incredible contrast between the crazy green mountains and the crystal clear water. That’s what makes Fiji so unique.
My perfect day in Fiji would start with checking the surf and weather forecast. If there’s good swell and no wind, I’ll hit the waves first thing.
After that, maybe some yoga or a hike to take in those incredible views followed by finding the perfect spot to watch the sunset.
And to cap it all off, a nice dinner of local fresh seafood and a spicy marg, of course. It’s the best life, really.
For first-timers wanting to experience both luxury and local culture, I’d say don’t be afraid to venture out from your resort.
Visit a local school or check out a traditional dance performance. The culture here is so rich and the people are incredibly warm.
Oh, and definitely try kava if you get the chance. It might not taste great, but it’s such a cool ceremonial experience that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
If you’re not into surfing, no worries! Fiji’s got so much to offer. Snorkelling is my absolute go-to when I’m not catching waves. It’s so relaxing and the marine life here is incredible – you might see dolphins, turtles, and all sorts of colourful fish.
But there’s also great hiking in those lush mountains, coral planting if you’re keen to give back to the ocean like me, and the incredible Quan Spa at the resort for treatments when you need to unwind.
The adventure options are endless in Fiji.
